Diamonds Do Chip!

Can diamonds really chip? Absolutely! Keep in mind, it is extremely hard for a diamond to actually break, but a diamond’s edges can and will chip if you’re not careful.

Hitting your diamond at a specific angle with just enough impact can definitely chip it, all it takes is that one knock. Part of the reason why prongs exist is to hold it in place and to help to prevent chipping. We do have some tips for you so you can prevent chipping!

  1. Shop wisely! What we mean by this is, avoid shapes with points or sharp corners and choose settings that protects the diamond: V-Shaped prongs and bezels.

  2. Remove your ring when you know you will be sweating - a.k.a when working out, doing manual labor, or gardening. We recommend that you take it off if there is a change of it slipping off or hitting something hard.

There are some warning signs that you should look out for and keep in mind. Check for bent, broken or missing prongs. Check that the ring is actually your size - perform a delicate shake test (put the ring on and gently shake your hand) if the ring doesn’t stay in place, it might be time to get it resized.

If you’re worried, bring it on in! We’ll be happy to take a look at it for you and check to make sure that the diamond is nice and tight in its’ place and that there are no chips on it/them.

Should you have a chipped diamond, don’t get discouraged, there are things we can do in some cases to save your diamond. You can get your diamond recut or set into a new setting/piece to hide the chip. We can always assess the damage for you and suggest the best course of action!

As always, we recommend having your jewelry insured. This will definitely save you a pretty penny in the long run and it is nice to have that piece of mind.
