It’s All About The March Babies

Have you ever stopped and taken a look at an Aquamarine stone, and caught yourself saying - “wow, this really reminds me of water!”? This is a common occurrence and as jewelers we get this comment a lot.

Aquamarine, March’s traditional birthstone, has been around for thousands of years and during this whole time, everyone has always associated this beautiful stone with water. The name “Aquamarine” comes from the phrase “water of the sea” and was named this for its many shades of blue.

This magnificent stone has also been called “Sailor’s Stone” because back in the day, seamen believed that Aquamarine stones would protect them from harsh seas and bad storms.

Commonly found today in Brazil, Africa, Asia, and even Colorado - but guess who discovered it? The Greeks! This stone is believed to have been discovered by Greeks around 480 - 800 B.C. and was just as popular back then as it is now. So popular that we are now seeing it as parts of engagement rings and even being the center stone of engagement rings (millennials have really made this popular - more on this below). Justin Timberlake added two small Aquamarines to his wife’s engagement ring to honor her birthday, which is March 3rd (how cute!)

Some of the most well-known Aquamarines belong to Queen Elizabeth II, reigning Queen of England. These were gifted to her by the President of Brazil back in 1953 during her coronation. It is a stunning set necklace and earring set that to this day we all swoon over. See below for photos!

As mentioned previously, millennials are now popularizing the use of Aquamarine as center stones in engagement rings and pairing this with Rose Gold metal. Of course the price point is a big one here but the combination of these two colors makes it absolutely stunning.

This semi-precious stone has a hardness of 8 making it a great stone to wear daily - of course don’t take it on to a construction site or the gym!

BLOODSTONE - The Non-Traditional Birthstone

As always,  there is a non-traditional birthstone - for March babies it is the Bloodstone. In modern days, people believe that this stone is a “lucky charm” and it is prized by athletes who want to “grow their strength”.

The name bloodstone comes from the unique red markings that almost resemble a stream of blood and many religious leaders say it represents the blood of Christ. With deep green tones, this blood red really stands out and can catch any eye. Commonly found in pendants and bracelets, this stone is a powerful looking one

Bloodstones on the market today come from India but this stone can also be found in parts of Brazil, Australia, and China. Their hardness on the scale is: 6.5-7 so they are durable stones but never stop taking care of them!
