Getting Engaged? Keep That Ring Safe!

Jay Garcia

You’re about to take one of the biggest steps in your life and you have just made one of the most expensive and meaningful purchases you will ever make (after a home and a car of course). But you are unsure of where to keep the ring so that it will be hidden and safe? Read on!

Sock drawers and glove boxes are the two most common “hiding places” and two of the least safe options. We’ve got a few great options for you:

  1. Leave with your jeweler - as jewelers we have safes that are extremely safe where we feel comfortable enough to leave our own pieces. Make sure to ask your jeweler if they can keep it for you and if this is an option, ask if it is covered under the business's insurance. If not, insure the ring yourself right away (you or your soon-to-be fiancé will have to do this sooner or later).

  2. Rent a safety deposit box at your bank - this is probably your safest option as safe being that these safety deposit boxes are held within a larger safe. Keep in mind though, that no matter what safe or safety deposit box you use or there is no option that is complete fire, flood, or theft proof so we of course, as before, recommend getting insurance on the ring right away.

The above two options are the safest and best bet when trying to keep a ring safe before the big day. However, we know that many romantics like to propose while on vacation so make to avoid the following:

  • No matter what, do not put the ring in your luggage. Your luggage is subject to inspection while at airports, getting onto cruise ships, etc. Things happen and it could easily get misplaced or go missing.

  • If you do put the ring in your carry on (which you believe will be with you at all times), make sure to not hand your carry on to the hotel staff or concierge. Again, things go missing and you do not want to lose this very special piece.

If you are proposing while on vacation make sure to keep the ring on you at all times. Keep it protected but always on you!

Lastly, as mentioned previously, make sure to insure the ring no matter what! Mistakes do happen, things go missing, can get damaged. We do recommend using Jeweler’s Mutual, which is insurance dedicated just to jewelry. We have many customers that are insured through Jeweler’s Mutual and are extremely happy. No matter what insurance company/option you choose, we want to make sure that your big day and big investment are protected.
